Your
adaptability as a resource
- When all
else fails what can YOU do differently? The more you put this attitude
into practice, the more adaptable you will be. The more you say that
someone else needs to do something, the less adaptable you will be.
- In the
face of rapid change, we feel safe staying with the familiar.
- How adaptable
are you?
- How readily
have you adjusted when things have changed?
- Do you
complain loudly, or see changes as opportunities for you?
- How radical
have your personal transitions been?
- Have you
worked abroad, changed functions, developed totally new skills, taken
on new roles, abandoned old ways of doing things?
- How comfortable
are you with taking risks? See risk averse and risk taking.
- What thought
processes do you go through to adapt to change?
- Do you
fortify your confidence by reviewing your strengths?
- Do you
tell yourself how you coped with previous changes and can again?
- Or do you
adopt a defeatest, ''here we go again'' mentality that focuses on placing
blame elsewhere for your predicament?
- How comfortable
are you with learning from mistakes?
- Or are
you a perfectionist, believing in ''right first time'' always?
- Are you
a detail person or is your focus 80/20 - get it mostly right?
- Worrying
too much about detail does not indicate high adaptability.
- How can
you increase your adaptability, take more risks, live with mistakes
and feel more comfortable learning as you go?
- Learning
organizations learn through trial and error because complexity makes
it hard to think of everything in advance.
- Why should
you be any better at anticipating the future?
- Why should
you beat yourself for making mistakes faced with complexity?
- How can
you use your adaptability to address current challenges?
