Afraid of what you will hear?

  • No one likes negative feedback.
  • We differ only in how well we can take it in and use it.
  • Try asking yourself: ''What exactly am I afraid of?''
  • That some specific weakness will come to light?
  • That you're not really competent at all, just fooling people?
  • Could you really have got where you are if this were true?
  • What is the worst that could happen?
  • How bad is that on a scale of 1 to 10?
  • Can you not think of lots of worse things that could happen?
  • Are you not at least as competent as most of your colleagues?
  • Can you think of some colleagues who can't do what you can do?
  • Do you feel you have to be perfect or nothing?
  • How reasonable are the standards you set yourself?
  • Can you modify the demands you make of yourself?
  • Is it not acceptable to you to be just OK, good enough?
  • Why are you driving yourself to be perfect?
  • What benefits do you see of getting feedback?
  • Would it not at least eliminate the anxiety of not knowing?
  • Perhaps it is not as bad as you think.
  • If you are being driven by standards set by your parents, why are you still letting them run your life?
  • Would not more balanced standards of your own choosing give you a greater sense of control over your actions and self worth?
  • How could you engineer feedback to get it in palatable doses?
  • Does it make sense to give your customers more than they pay for?
  • How effective is the investment of your time and resources if your costs are higher than your profits?
  • What would be a more acceptable return?
  • How well are you managing yourself if you invest more than you get in return?
