Guilt culture

  • Does your culture punish those who don't work all hours?
  • Why do you feel guilty if you don't work so hard?
  • Can you put your finger on the specific factors? How can you modify how you view them?
  • To what extent are you imposing unrealistic standards on yourself?
  • One perspective that might be of use here is simply that no one can make us feel anything. That we have a choice about what we feel. Can you choose to feel differently?
  • Is there someone specifically who you are trying to avoid displeasing? Your boss? Colleagues? Subordinates? Are you completely clear about their expectations of you?
  • Can you challenge your culture, asking whether results should not be valued more than time spent?
  • Is there a business case for working smarter rather than harder?
  • How strategic are you if you do not prioritize, doing everything that comes at you?
  • How much more value could you add if you focused on what is really important?
  • Can you see this situation as a leadership opportunity for you?
