Building
new allegiances
- How
can you avoid being swept aside by the new broom?
- Incoming
executives often sweep out the team they inherit.
- Sometimes
this is necessary, but it might be low confidence.
- Bringing
in familiar faces provides some comfort.
- You
make things worse for yourself by continually pointing out to new bosses
that things are not done like that around here.
- Making
yourself difficult even when you think you are being helpful can be
threatening to a less than confident newcomer.
- Take
stock of your own emotional state. You might think you have good reasons
to criticize your new boss, but you could resent the newcomer for some
deeper emotional reason. It's common to resent outsiders being imposed
on us. Then there's the loss of your old boss. Maybe you felt you should
have been promoted. How can you turn your attitude around so you
can move ahead more positively?
Create
new allegiances
- In
future, how can you create a wider set of allegiances?
- Identify
all your key internal customers in addition to your new boss.
- Develop
a customer service mindset towards them.
- Begin
by acquiring a deeper understanding of their needs.
- How
can you get closer to them?
- What
partnerships or strategic alliances can you create?
- How
can you help your customers, including your boss, succeed?
