What
to learn
- Not
all development needs are weaknesses - things you are doing now that
hamper your chances of success.
- Some
development needs are also gaps between where you are now and where
you want to be in the future, i.e. learning more about the business,
finance, new markets, strategy, etc.
- This
is a willingness to look forward, to prepare for the future.
- The
rate of change is such that we all need to learn new things fast.
- The
advantage of focusing on knowledge and experience gaps is that you're
always moving ahead. This attitude fosters forward momentum rather than
self-doubt due to self-criticism for bad habits.
- But,
if these are the only development needs you see in yourself, you might
be overlooking some bad habits that only others can see in you.
- The
key is to avoid blinding ourselves to real strategic weaknesses, but
not to get so weighed down by them that we lose confidence and forward
momentum.
- Hence,
strive to balance the development of new knowledge and experience with
addressing counterproductive habits.
- Integrity
entails balance - not being so weighed down by weaknesses that we're
immobilized but, conversely, not denying the reality of the weaknesses
we do have.
