What's expected of me?

  • It is easy to drift into this situation - priorities change so fast.
  • How regularly do you and your boss review your priorities?
  • Do you ask if priorities have changed or do you leave it to your boss?
  • If you were running your own business, would you leave it to your customers to update you on their changing plans?
  • If you agree that your boss is one of your most important customers, then is it not up to you to make sure you are abreast of his/her changing needs?
  • Effective managers think strategically - always striving to invest their limited personal resources where they will yield the greatest return.
  • If you are spending a lot of time doing things that only you think are important, how effectively can you be managing?
  • Is this a leadership opportunity for you? It's not just a matter of asking what are your boss's priorities but of also taking the lead in helping him/her set the agenda for your department. The point is to engage in dialogue rather than guess or simply ask.
