Too introverted?

  • Introverts prefer a small circle of close friends or immediate colleagues.
  • Becoming more outgoing does not require being the life and soul of the party.
  • It is not necessary to become an entertainer.
  • But can you build on something you are already doing?
  • How have you built relationships with those you already know well?
  • What can you adapt from that approach to use with other people?
  • Is there a customer whose needs you try to meet? Your boss?
  • Do you agree that you are effectively running your own business in the sense that you are offering services to at least one customer?
  • Do you try to understand your customer's needs better or do you expect him/her to come to you? If the latter, how successful can your business be?
  • What other key stakeholders could support you in your personal ambitions?
  • How could you get involved in their pet projects?
  • When asked for help, do you say ''That's not my job.''?
  • Could you work more closely with people without having to be best friends?
  • Not everyone - just a handful who could be of most benefit to your career.
  • Getting promoted is partly about getting elected - for that you need to cultivate a wider support group than your boss or a few colleagues.
  • Focus on those with influence - look for common interests, business and personal.
