Why
a vision?
- Is
this a leadership style issue for you?
- Many
leaders have a professional or laissez faire style - letting their team
find their own direction. They see their team members as self-directed
professional colleagues rather than as subordinates.
- Or,
have visions in your experience been too abstract?
- Does
your team need to pull together in a common direction or do they work
quite separately from each other on different projects?
- Is
your environment so complex that direction changes rapidly and is too
uncertain?
- If
your team needs to pull together in a complex, rapidly changing environment,
then not having a vision could mean poor use of resources, wasted energy,
frustration and de-motivation.
- How
do you see your role as leader?
- Do
you prefer to lead solely by example?
- Is
that just your preference or is it what your team needs?
- Some
leaders assume that their team should not need much direction simply
because they don't need much themselves.
- If
your team is de-motivated, underperforming or complaining about a lack
of direction, what might you do about it?
- How
can you create a vision that is not too inconsistent with your style
but that also meets the needs of your team?
- Check
out the other vision pages if you have not already done so.
