Reframing Your Role
Written by Mitch McCrimmon
- How do you define yourself now?
- Expert?
- Functional specialist?
- Leader?
- Hero?
- Change champion?
- Outstanding achiever?
- Consistent winner?
- The best in your field?
- How aligned is your identity to where you really are at the moment?
- In what ways is it out of date?
- Can you re-frame your role?
- Broker - knowing someone else who can do it.
- Manager - not a doer, but a coordinator.
- Coach - help others to think differently.
- Facilitator, catalyst - link people to other resources.
- Guide - show others how things work around here.
- Advisor - internal consultant.
- Mentor - help others learn to work smarter.
- Trainer - show others how to help themselves.
- Can you find value in being a coach rather than heroic goal scorer?
- Can you base your self worth on broader leadership or mentoring?
- What are some new ways of adding value?
- What satisfaction could you gain from developing others?
- Their development is retarded if you retain too much authority.
- Position your change as personal growth rather than as a loss.
- Can you see your situation as a fresh start, not as an ending?
- You might even gain respect for facing up to such a challenge.
- As we age, we have a tendency to look to the past more than to the future.
- How can you counter this inclination in yourself?
- How can the present be a time of new opportunities for you?
